A History of Engraving Art

The history of the art of engraving goes back to as far as thousands of years. There were already engraved cups, bowls and even jewellery that people used as gift and signs of respect and attention. History of Cufflinks

Cufflinks UK

Here we will discuss the history of cufflinks, including cufflinks UK.

It goes back to Middle Ages when so called cuff string decorated wrists of stylish men of yore. We can find early reference to what is now known as cufflinks in the London Gazette of year 1684 which described a pair of cuff buttons with diamonds. This magazine published an article about gold enameled cuff buttons two years later.  Then a decorated single chained cufflink made of gold was discovered in Suffolk, England, in seventeenth century.

French cuff, or poignet mousquetaire, came into existence in mid-nineteenth centrury, giving a way for continuing taste for decorating sleeve ends. It marked the boom of cufflinks of many styles.

It was beginning of the twentieth century that history of cufflinks entered its vintage era. Well-known designers as Cartier and Tiffany made a whole range of original designs, from gold and silver materials to platinum. Even this only combination, gold and platinum, provided a lot of opportunities to make intricate styles and patterns. Many cufflinks were decorated with gemstones and hard stones.

Victorian and Edwardian gold cufflinks went with a lot of antique and original designs, with up to eighteen carat. There were diamond studded fox heads, game birds or fish that attracted sport fans. Novelty designs included skulls and crossbones. Race horses and attractive women were very popular, too.

Rock crystals were fused together in silver in some of the vintage cufflinks. Most cufflink styles were inspired by nature or sports. There were such designs as globe or air balloon, too.

Famous designers Van Cleef and Arpels and Cartier contributed to this themed period of cufflinks. For instance, they made distinctive checkerboard engraved with diamond studs. Rubes and sapphires adorned vintage cufflinks. Faberg designs included diamond and gem sets that you can see in some shops in Moscow and London.

In the thirties of last centrury there was art deco cufflinks with geometrical shapes that were adapted a couple of decades later with rectangular check and bar.

Retro vintage cufflinks, like 70s chunky hard stone and chunky circles cufflinks, made its way to catalogs.

If you want to buy a pair of cufflinks, be sure to inspect them for dents or repair. Enamel damage is concealed by paint that is almost impossible to match the original look.

Without a designer’s mark vintage cufflinks will not be truly vintage. Find information about cufflinks and cufflinks UK on our website.
